Five Continents Goal For Longford Teacher Adrian
Friday, September 03, 2010
A Longford local is about to continue his quest for living in five different continents – by the help of an English teaching qualification.
24 year old Adrian Bratten has already worked in America. And he has just completed a year long contract in South Korea teaching English to school-children.
With two continents under his belt, Adrian is leaving in August to further his great adventure by teaching English again – this time in the Czech Republic. And his journey doesn’t stop there.
Adrian, who graduated in software engineering from Dublin City University, explained: “After finding it difficult to get a job in software engineering, I thought I should do something I love – travelling – and that’s when I took a 100 hour Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course with i-to-i. This enabled me to work in South Korea – it was fantastic.
“Now I have this certificate, I can work around the world. I’m now going to teach English to business people in Liberec through a language school.”
Adrian is one of thousands of people every year who take a TEFL course through County Waterford based i-to-i, and who also realise that in many cases, just the certificate is needed to open the gateway to a rewarding teaching experience around the world.
And why the five-continent ambition?: “It’s great experiencing different cultures, languages, food, having amazing adventures – it opens up your mind and is brilliant character building.
“After the Czech Republic, I plan to use TEFL to work in Columbia. Then on to Africa, and teaching in Australia - and hopefully my goal will be achieved.”
In the meantime, Adrian is looking forward to sampling the many beers in the Czech Republic, and another passion of his – snowboarding.
