Voting & Elections

To register to vote in an election or a referendum you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • You must be 18 years of age by the 15th February next
  • Ordinarily resident at the address at which you wish to be registered
  • Citizenship – you must inform the Registration Authority of your citizenship status. This determines the type of election at which an elector may vote.

The Register of Electors is published on 1st February each year and comes into force for a period of 12 months beginning on 15th February of each year.  This Register is used at every election and referendum held during the year. 


Persons aged 18 years or over on the day the register comes into force are entitled to be on the register.  The address at which a person is registered will be the address he/she resides in on the 1st September preceding publication. A person can register at one address only. 


In the event an election/referendum is called, and you are not on the register, you can apply to be included on a Supplement to the Register prior to the election.

  • Applications to the Supplement must be submitted before the fourteenth day (Sundays, public holidays and Good Friday excluded) before polling day.

If you find your details are incorrect or you would like to make an application for inclusion on the Register of Electors, you may do so by downloading an RFA form here.  Forms are also available in the offices of Longford County Council, post offices, public libraries and Garda stations.
