General Seán MacEoin Memorial

General Seán MacEoin was the leader of the North Longford Flying Column and a hero of the Irish War of Independence. Known as 'The Blacksmith of Ballinalee', he was born in Bunlahy, Granard, County Longford.

It is at the crossroads in Ballinalee where a statue of General MacÉoin stands. Created by sculptor Rory Breslin, the statue is traditional, cast in bronze, and stands on a limestone plinth. It depicts MacEoin in his early twenties dressed in a military uniform. His head turned to the right towards Clonfin. His right arm is resting on an anvil cast from a mould of the anvil MacEoin would have used in his youth. It is balanced on a block of wood. In his hand is a copy of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921.

Into the limestone plinth is carved the names of the North Longford Flying Column members who participated in the Clonfin ambush.
